Many people think of Alzheimer\u2019s as a memory-loss illness and don\u2019t realize that it\u2019s a disease that kills. In fact, it is the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S., taking more lives annually than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined<\/em>. It\u2019s the only killer among the top 10 that cannot be prevented, delayed or cured.<\/p>\n

Pretty grim, I know.<\/p>\n

As I\u2019ve often said, when there\u2019s a diagnosis of Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>, there are two patients: the person with the disease and <\/em>the caregiver.<\/p>\n

People caught up in caregiving may become ill themselves because of the strain they are under. They often don\u2019t eat well, exercise, get enough sleep or have time to themselves. I call that illness \u201ccare-heimer\u2019s.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cCare-heimer\u2019s\u201dcan be fatal too \u2013 but it doesn\u2019t have to be.<\/p>\n

Loneliness and isolation, as well as physical stress associated with Alzheimer’s disease can be dead<\/em>ly for caregivers.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

When you tell others what you are experiencing, you\u2019ll probably get more hugs and maybe even a chicken casserole. When you go to counseling or a support group, you\u2019ll learn skills to deal with the daily challenges of caring for someone who lives with Alzheimer’s. When you open up, the burden of caregiving may seem a little lighter.<\/p>\n

I know what a lonely and depressing place it is when a loved one has Alzheimer\u2019s. Maybe you feel guilty about asking for help \u2013 but you shouldn\u2019t. The Alzheimer\u2019s Association<\/a> (1-800-272-3900 or alz.org) is there for you with free services and support. They\u2019ll help you survive \u201ccare-heimer\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n

Your loved one is counting on you more than ever. Don\u2019t try to go it alone. Don\u2019t become a victim of \u201ccare-heimer\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n
