I\u2019m continually touched by the wonderful comments about\u00a0My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and how the book resonates\u00a0with Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a> and other dementia caregivers.<\/p>\n

Many times, I\u2019m humbled by the stories I hear from those who provide care to a family member. One reader I recently met spoke with great wisdom about how she defused a possible argument with her father, who lives with dementia.<\/p>\n

This woman, who is in her 40s, got a call at work one day from her mother. \u201cCome right away,\u201d the mother said, \u201cDad is very confused and I can\u2019t talk sense to him.\u201d So of course she hurried to her parents’ home.<\/p>\n

When she got there, there stood Dad in the living room, extending one arm as though he were casting a fishing line and cranking his other hand as if he were reeling the line back in.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatcha doing, Dad?\u201d the daughter asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cFishing,\u201d he replied.\"fishing<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatcha fishing for?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWalleye,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love walleye. Can I join you?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cSure,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

So she stood next to him, pretending to fish and carrying on the kind of gentle conversation that you might expect out on the lake. She had joined her father\u2019s world, rather than expecting him to live in hers.<\/p>\n

Her mother, meanwhile, was unable to make the connection. \u201cWhat should I do if he\u2019s like this again?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

The daughter had the perfect answer: \u201cGet in the boat with him.\u201d<\/p>\n
